Mei Tais
Like wraps and slings, the basic design of these has been round for hundreds and hundreds of years. They
are suitable for front and back carries and can be used from birth right through to 2-3yr olds.

How they work:
~ There is a panel of fabric that is tied onto you with two ties
at the bottom round your waist, and then two longer ties that
go over your shoulders and around your torso, giving a really
comfortable carry as the baby's weight is distributed right
around you.

~ Learning to tie a Mei Tai is very straight forward and the
lack of buckles means that you can share a carrier like this
easily without having to adjust buckles and ties each time.
~ Newborns go in with their legs tucked up underneath them,
and then as they get bigger they sit with their bottom in the
base of the carrier with their legs wrapped round you
|
|
Advantages: Comfortable, good at distributing weight, ideal for newborns through to toddlers. Come in very very lovely
designs - and can usually be worn 'inside out' if the person sharing your carrier doesn't like the pattern on the outside!
Disadvantages: At around 4 mths there are a few weeks when the baby may be too big for the legs in position, but not
quite ready for legs out.

What am I paying for?
Mei Tais need to be made to high standards to be safe and comfortable. Designers work on putting little bits of
padding in the right places, and getting the angles and lengths of straps right. A mei tai should have multiple
layers of fabric that have been properly sewn and reinforced where the straps meet the panels.
